Turkey! Turkey!

Turkey! Turkey!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Thanksgiving is great for so many reasons - family, friends, & food.

On most Thanksgiving tables, you will find an array of food. How much thought have you put into your turkey purchase?  Our food purchases say a lot about what we believe is important.  What do you consider when buying your turkey and all the fixings?

These are items I think about when buying food...
  • Is it local?
  • Is it natural?
  • Is it organic?
  • Is it Non-GMO?
These terms can be confusing, so here are some basic definitions.

What does local mean?  Local means buying foods made as close to your home as possible.

What does natural mean?  This is a widely used term and has no standards in the United States.  Often natural products are less processed and do not contain antibiotics.  Sometimes meat that can not be certified as organic is called natural - this occurs when the meat is pasture-fed as the pasture can not be certified organic.

What does organic mean?  Organic foods are foods that are produced using methods of organic farming, which requires certification.  Organic foods do not use synthetic inputs such as synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

What is Non-GMO? GMO means genetically modified organism.  Therefore, a Non-GMO product has not been altered using genetic engineering techniques.

Thanksgiving food and drink options that are local, natural, organic and/or Non-GMO can be found at all of our local grocery stores.  Enjoy!
